The Bison – Pugdundee Safaris

Near Bandipur National Park, Karnataka

A Pugdundee Safaris lodge on Bandipur’s edge, set among bamboo and teak forest at the foot of the Western Ghats.

Overview

The Bison sits at the meeting point of Karnataka’s Bandipur, Kerala’s Wayanad and Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai reserves, part of one of South India’s largest contiguous forest blocks. The lodge favours a quiet, naturalist-led style of stay, set among bamboo groves at the foot of the Western Ghats.

Rooms & Table

The Rooms

Cottages and suites built in natural materials, each with a private veranda facing the surrounding forest, simply furnished in keeping with the lodge’s understated style.

Food & Service

Regional Karnataka cooking alongside broader Indian dishes, served in an open dining area overlooking the grounds.

Activities

Game drives into Bandipur, nature walks through the surrounding forest, and access to the wider Nilgiri Biosphere’s exceptional elephant and gaur populations.

Wildlife & Photography

Bandipur forms part of the largest tiger and elephant landscape in South Asia, and sightings here often include large elephant herds and gaur alongside the reserve’s tigers and leopards.

A Photographer's Note

The bamboo and teak mix here produces dappled, textured light very different from central India’s more open sal forests, worth exposing for deliberately rather than fighting.

Conservation & Impact

Pugdundee’s community and conservation programmes extend to Bandipur’s buffer villages, with local staffing and support for habitat protection across the wider Nilgiri landscape.
