Hatari Lodge takes its name from the 1962 John Wayne film shot on the same farm, and has been run for decades by the family connected to that history, giving it a genuinely personal, old-Africa character rare on Tanzania’s more commercial northern circuit.
Rooms & Table
The Rooms
A small number of individually styled rooms with mid-century decor reflecting the property’s cinematic history, each with views toward Mount Meru or Kilimanjaro on clear days.
Food & Service
Home-style meals served communally, often with the owning family present, in keeping with the lodge’s small, personal scale.
Activities
Game drives and walking safaris through Arusha National Park’s varied terrain, canoeing on the Momella Lakes, and, on clear days, views of both Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.
Wildlife & Photography
Arusha National Park is one of the few in Tanzania where walking safaris are widely permitted, home to giraffe, buffalo, and some of the country’s healthiest black-and-white colobus monkey populations.
A Photographer's Note
The Momella Lakes are a strong location for flamingo and waterbird photography, a change of pace from the park’s forest and montane wildlife.
Conservation & Impact
The lodge’s long family stewardship of the surrounding land has supported habitat protection on Arusha National Park’s boundary for several decades.
