Amuka Safari Lodge

Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranch, Uganda

Established specifically to reintroduce rhino to Uganda after the species was hunted to extinction there, making it a uniquely significant conservation site.

Overview

Amuka Safari Lodge sits within Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranch, established specifically to reintroduce rhino to Uganda after the species was hunted to extinction there during decades of civil conflict, making it a uniquely significant conservation site.

Rooms & Table

The Rooms

Cottages set among the ranch’s woodland, comfortably furnished with private verandas facing the surrounding grassland.

Food & Service

Ugandan dishes served communally, often with conversation centred on the ranch’s rhino reintroduction programme.

Activities

Guided rhino tracking on foot, one of the few places in East Africa where this is done specifically for reintroduced animals, plus birdwatching and canoeing.

Wildlife & Photography

Ziwa holds Uganda’s only population of both black and white rhino, entirely the result of a deliberate reintroduction programme following the species’ local extinction.

A Photographer's Note

On-foot rhino tracking at Ziwa offers unusually close, unhurried access compared to vehicle-based rhino viewing found at larger reserves elsewhere in Africa.

Conservation & Impact

Ziwa’s rhino reintroduction programme is one of the most significant single-species conservation efforts in Uganda’s recent history, rebuilding a population from zero after the species’ complete local extinction.
