Sarova Shaba Game Lodge is the sole lodge within Shaba National Reserve, part of the same semi-arid ecosystem as neighbouring Samburu and Buffalo Springs. Its chalet-style rooms are arranged around natural springs, fish ponds and gardens on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, in the landscape where Joy Adamson raised and released the lioness Elsa.
Around 85 chalet-style rooms with river or garden views, each with a private terrace looking onto the springs, fish ponds and surrounding gardens.
A main restaurant and bar serve full-board meals, with a spa, swimming pool and riverside grounds for time spent at the lodge.
Game drives through Shaba’s rocky, spring-fed terrain, birdwatching along the Ewaso Nyiro River, spa treatments, and a swimming pool set among the lodge’s gardens.
Shaba’s volcanic outcrops and natural springs draw the dry-country “Samburu Special Five” — gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich and Beisa oryx — alongside elephant and lion along the river.
The springs and fish ponds directly around the lodge give close, easy photography of birdlife without needing to leave camp, a useful complement to the wider game drives.
As part of the Sarova group, the lodge follows the chain’s broader sustainability practices around water and energy use in a reserve where natural springs are the ecological centrepiece.
