Summary

South Luangwa & Victoria Falls

Zambia’s Luangwa Valley and Zimbabwe’s most famous natural landmark rarely feature on the same trip, separated as they are by a full internal flight, but this itinerary makes the case for combining them: the walking-safari tradition of South Luangwa National Park followed by the raw physical spectacle of Victoria Falls.

The South Luangwa leg runs six days, long enough to properly explore the park that pioneered the walking safari. A flight or drive into the park is followed by an afternoon game drive on arrival, and game drives track the park’s leopard and lion populations from the first full day, with a guided morning walk giving a ground-level alternative before the vehicle takes over again in the afternoon. Later days follow the Luangwa River in search of elephant and hippo, working different sectors of the park across two further full days of game drives, with a final full day offering the option of a night drive to search out nocturnal predators — South Luangwa’s guides have decades of practice reading the bush after dark, and leopard sightings on night drives here are considerably more consistent than in most other parks.

A flight then carries the trip to Livingstone for an entirely different register of experience: Victoria Falls, where the Zambezi River drops more than a hundred metres into a narrow gorge in a single unbroken curtain, generating spray visible from miles away during peak flow. An afternoon visit takes in the falls’ viewpoints from the Zambian side, and a full day at leisure offers the option of white-water rafting through the gorge below or a helicopter flight over the falls for the aerial perspective that ground level simply can’t match.

A final day includes a sunset cruise on the Zambezi above the falls, watching elephant and hippo along the riverbank as the light changes, a considerably calmer close to a day that might have included rafting the same river’s rapids that morning, before the transfer to Livingstone airport for the onward flight.

Best timed for June through October, this itinerary pairs Zambia’s most storied wildlife park with one of the natural world’s most dramatic single features — walking safaris by day, one of Africa’s great spectacles to close the trip, appealing equally to committed wildlife travelers and to those simply wanting to tick off one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

The Luangwa Valley sits within the Great Rift Valley system, its dramatic escarpment views a reminder that the same geological forces shaping the Rift further north in Kenya and Tanzania run through this stretch of Zambia as well, though the valley itself is considerably less visited than its East African counterparts. Victoria Falls, meanwhile, forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and the Zambian side offers slightly more intimate viewpoints than the busier Zimbabwean approach, alongside more immediate access to activities in the gorge below. Combining the two destinations across ten days gives travelers a genuine sense of southern Africa’s range — remote bush on foot, followed by one of the most recognisable natural landmarks on the planet, each experienced without needing to compromise on either. Many travelers on this circuit describe the shift from Luangwa’s quiet bush to the falls’ roar and spray as the most dramatic contrast of their entire trip, two very different registers of natural drama within a single week.
