Summary
At the very tip of Iceland’s Westfjords, reachable only by boat, Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is uninhabited, roadless, and one of the last truly wild corners of Europe. It is also the best place on Earth to watch and photograph the Arctic fox in a fully natural setting, undisturbed by roads or livestock. In summer, foxes raise their pups around dens tucked into the reserve’s cliffs and tundra; in the depths of winter, the same animals appear in full white coats against the snow, with the northern lights adding a further reason to make the crossing.
Wildlife & Landscape
The Arctic fox is the reserve’s defining resident, present year-round but at its most rewarding in two distinct windows: summer, when den-watching offers a rare chance to observe pups and denning behaviour up close, and winter, when foxes carry their thick white coats and the low Arctic light stretches the golden hour for most of the day. Seabird cliffs around the reserve’s edges add further photographic variety in the summer months.
Getting There
Access is by boat only, typically departing from Ísafjörður in the Westfjords, with crossing times depending on conditions and the specific landing point within the reserve. There is no permanent settlement, road access, or mobile signal once inside Hornstrandir, and visits are planned around weather windows.
