Summary

Solio — The Rhinos World

There are few places in Africa where wildlife, landscape, and conservation come together as seamlessly as Solio.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kenya, Solio is one of the most successful rhino sanctuaries in the world — a place where both black and white rhinos thrive in remarkable density.

But this journey is not just about photographing rhinos.

It is about entering their world — understanding their presence, their rhythm, and the subtle ways they interact with light, terrain, and each other.

This edition of Solio is part of the Kipekee Visionary Series — a collection of journeys designed in collaboration with some of the most respected voices in wildlife photography. These are not standard workshops. They are intimate, idea-driven experiences built around seeing differently.

In this case, we are joined by Gurcharan Roopra, a photographer whose work sits among the most respected in the world of wildlife imagery. Over the years, his images have quietly shaped how many of us think about light, form, and storytelling in the wild. What makes this collaboration special is not just his standing, but the perspective he brings — thoughtful, precise, and deeply considered.

With just four participants, this is an exceptionally exclusive experience. Every moment in the field is unhurried, intentional, and deeply immersive.

The Visionary Series

The Visionary Series represents the most refined expression of Kipekee Journeys.

These journeys are:

  • designed in collaboration with globally respected photographers
  • limited to extremely small groups for deeper engagement
  • focused on creative growth, not just sightings
  • built around ideas, vision, and interpretation of the wild

Each journey in this series is unique — shaped not just by the destination, but by the minds leading it.

Solio, with its quiet power and minimalistic beauty, provides the perfect canvas for this philosophy.

Why Solio is Special

  • One of Africa’s most successful rhino conservation landscapes, with exceptional density of both black and white rhinos
  • Clean, open terrain ideal for minimalistic and powerful compositions
  • Dramatic backdrops with Mount Kenya and changing skies
  • Opportunities for intimate encounters and behavioural observations
  • A rare chance to work slowly and creatively with a single subject — the rhino

What Makes This Journey Unique

  • Part of the Visionary Series, co-led by Gurcharan Roopra
  • Ultra-small group (maximum 4 guests) allowing unmatched field flexibility
  • Dedicated focus on rhino photography as a subject, not a sighting
  • Emphasis on minimalism, mood, and strong visual storytelling
  • Continuous in-field dialogue on creative decisions, framing, and interpretation

Who This Journey is For

This journey is ideal for photographers who:

  • want to explore light as a subject deeply rather than chase variety of subjects
  • are drawn to clean compositions, negative space, and minimalism
  • value mentorship and creative exchange at a high level
  • appreciate slow, immersive photography experiences

Solio is not loud. It does not overwhelm.

It reveals itself slowly — in the stillness of a grazing rhino, in the weight of its presence against open land, in the quiet drama of light and space.

This journey invites you to slow down, to observe, and to create with intent.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Nanyuki / Transfer to Solio

Arrival into Nanyuki followed by transfer to Solio. After settling in, we begin with an introductory session and, depending on light, a short evening drive. This is about understanding the landscape and beginning to observe how rhinos move within it.

Day 2

Entering the Rhino’s World

A full day dedicated to rhinos. We spend extended time with individuals and groups, studying behaviour, spacing, and interaction with light. The open terrain allows us to experiment with composition — from tight portraits to expansive environmental frames.

Day 3

Refinement and Creative Exploration

This day is about going deeper. We move beyond documentation into interpretation — working with negative space, tonal contrast, layering, and mood. With guidance from Rahul and Gurcharan Roopra, the focus shifts toward building images that feel intentional and personal.

Day 4

Final Session / Departure

A final morning drive to make the most of soft light and any unfinished ideas. After breakfast, we begin our departure.

FAQ

What Makes Visionary Series Different?

The Visionary Series is built around collaboration and perspective.

These journeys bring together globally respected photographers with distinct visual styles, creating an environment that goes beyond instruction. It becomes a space for exchange — of ideas, approaches, and ways of seeing.

With extremely small groups, the experience is deeply personal, immersive, and creatively focused.

This is a rare opportunity to experience two different photographic perspectives in the same space.

Rahul brings a strong emphasis on emotion, minimalism, and storytelling, while Gurcharan Roopra brings his own distinct approach to form, subject, and interpretation.

The interaction is fluid — often unfolding in the field — allowing you to absorb, question, and refine your own way of seeing.

Solio offers something very few places can — the ability to spend extended, uninterrupted time with rhinos in a clean, open landscape.

This allows us to move beyond sightings and into understanding.

By focusing on a single subject, you begin to see nuance — posture, behaviour, spacing, light — and translate that into stronger, more intentional images.

This journey is best suited for photographers who are comfortable with their camera and are looking to grow creatively.

While technical guidance will always be available, the focus here is on interpretation, composition, and visual storytelling — making it more rewarding for those who already have a basic foundation.

This journey is designed to refine how you see.

You can expect to develop a stronger understanding of:

simplifying compositions
working with negative space and minimalism
using light to shape mood and form
building a cohesive body of work around a single subject

More importantly, you will begin to move toward a more personal visual language — one that reflects how you experience the wild, not just how you record it.

Yes — most travellers are required to obtain a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) prior to arrival.

The process is typically straightforward and completed online. We recommend applying well in advance of your travel dates to avoid any last-minute delays.

Participants are responsible for ensuring their passport validity, documentation, and entry requirements are in order. We will, of course, guide you with the latest information closer to departure.
