Summary

Svalbard is one of the last remaining water wilderness areas on earth and we will be spending a good 10 days sailing around it. A place that is as remote as it can get and that’s the kind of place that we get to see some magnificent wildlife in. We start our journey from India, flying to Oslo and then from Oslo taking another flight to Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world on the biggest island on Svalbard, the Spitsbergen. “Svalbard” means “cold coasts” and was first mentioned in Icelandic texts in the 12th century. However, the archipelago has a relatively mild climate compared to other areas at the same latitude. In Longyearbyen, the average temperature ranges from -14°C in winter to 6°C in summer. The lowest temperatures in winter can reach -30°C and in summer nearly 20°C.

Itinerary

Day 1 Embark in Longyearbyen
10 Aug 2026

Arrive in Svalbard’s capital, briefings, board the vessel, set sail for fjord landscapes.

Day 2 Ice Floes & Arctic Seascapes
11 Aug 2026

Our Journey will be dependent on the pack-ice and most often, today will be the day we reach Amsterdoya. An old derelict cabin and one of the highways for polar bear sightings in past years.

Day 3 The cold shores
12 Aug 2026

Landings near walrus haulouts, explore ice edges, capture behavior from zodiac outings.

Day 4 Polar Bear Territory
13 Aug 2026

Patrol for polar bear movement, photograph from safe vantage, work with light on white subjects. Keeping our eyes peeled for the yellowish dots in the pack ice.

Day 5 Pack Ice
14 Aug 2026

We hope to be in the pack ice looking for wildlife for the next 2 days.

Day 6 More Pack Ice
15 Aug 2026

Navigate the ice with hopefully some bear breaks here and there

Day 7 to 9 Polar Light & Dusk Ambience
16-17-18 Aug 2026

Chase the soft extended golden hour, capture shapes, silhouettes, and ambient tones.

Day 8 Ice Edge Transitions
19 Aug 2026

On our way back into Isfjorden today, stopping by sea bird colonies and maybe a last dash into a fjord for the bears. Reaching port for the night halt.
