Greystoke Mahale

Lake Tanganyika shore, Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania

Reachable only by boat or light aircraft, built as a base for tracking one of Africa’s largest habituated wild chimpanzee populations.

Overview

Greystoke Mahale sits directly on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, reachable only by boat or light aircraft, a Nomad Tanzania camp built specifically as a base for tracking one of Africa’s largest habituated wild chimpanzee populations in the forested mountains above.

Rooms & Table

The Rooms

A small number of open-fronted tents built on the beach itself, each looking directly out over the lake, simply furnished to match the camp’s genuinely remote setting.

Food & Service

Home-style meals served on the beach or in an open dining structure, with the lake itself as a constant backdrop.

Activities

Chimpanzee tracking on foot into the mountains above camp, lake swimming and kayaking, and boat excursions along the Lake Tanganyika shoreline.

Wildlife & Photography

Mahale’s chimpanzee population, studied continuously since the 1960s, is one of the best-documented wild chimp communities in Africa, with tracking success rates that are among the highest anywhere.

A Photographer's Note

Chimp tracking here is done entirely on foot in dense forest, so a lighter, more mobile lens setup works better than the long-lens kit suited to open-plain game drives.

Conservation & Impact

Nomad Tanzania’s Mahale operation directly supports the Mahale Mountains Wildlife Research Centre’s decades-long chimpanzee research programme, one of the longest-running great ape studies in the world.
