Mfuwe Lodge has become internationally known for a genuine, entirely wild phenomenon: each year, a herd of elephants walks directly through the lodge’s open-plan lobby to reach fruiting mango trees in the courtyard beyond, a spectacle that draws photographers from around the world.
Rooms & Table
The Rooms
Chalets set along a lagoon within South Luangwa, comfortably furnished with private verandas overlooking the water.
Food & Service
Zambian and international dishes served with lagoon views, in a lodge whose open lobby design is itself part of the guest experience.
Activities
Game drives across South Luangwa’s oxbow lagoons and riverine forest, walking safaris (Zambia is widely credited as the birthplace of the walking safari), and, in season, the lobby elephant crossing itself.
Wildlife & Photography
South Luangwa holds an exceptionally dense concentration of leopard, alongside large elephant herds and one of Africa’s most storied walking safari traditions.
A Photographer's Note
The mango-season elephant lobby crossing, typically occurring for a short window each year, is one of the most unusual and reliably documented wildlife photography opportunities in Africa; timing a visit around it is worth checking in advance.
Conservation & Impact
The lodge supports South Luangwa’s community conservation programmes and the broader walking safari tradition pioneered by Norman Carr in the mid-twentieth century.
