Originally built by German settlers as a fishing camp, Oasis Lodge sits in the small lakeside town of Loiyangalani on the southeastern shore of Lake Turkana, Kenya’s vast desert lake. It remains the most established base for travellers exploring the far north, with sixteen en-suite rooms shaded by palm trees against an otherwise stark, volcanic landscape.

Meals are taken in a shaded dining area overlooking the lake, with picnic lunches available for day trips along the shore.
Boat trips on Lake Turkana, excursions along the lakeshore and nearby volcanic features, and day trips further into the Loiyangalani area toward South Island National Park.
Nile crocodiles are a regular sight along the shoreline, and the lake’s position on a major migratory flyway draws large numbers of waterbirds; the surrounding desert and volcanic islands offer striking, stark landscape subjects best appreciated at dawn and dusk.
Two spring-fed pools and a shaded bar give photographers somewhere to wait out the harsh midday light before the lake’s colours shift again toward evening.
As one of the longest-running properties in the region, the lodge is a significant source of local employment in a remote part of Kenya with very little other tourism infrastructure.
