Sand River Masai Mara sits on a secluded stretch of the river from which it takes its name, within the Masai Mara National Reserve and close enough to the Tanzania border to fall directly on the wildebeest migration’s crossing route. Its sixteen tents are split across two adjoining camps, each with its own dining and lounge areas, furnished to recall the exclusive tented safari camps of the late 1920s.
Sixteen tents divided between two camps, Sand River and the smaller Little Sand River, each with its own dining and lounge area: fifteen twin and double tents of around 49 square metres, plus a two-bedroom, 87-square-metre family tent with a shared central lounge.
Each of the two camps runs its own dining and bar area, with breakfasts often taken overlooking the Sand River itself and bush meals and sundowners built into the daily rhythm.
Shared game drives in custom 4×4 vehicles, with exclusive-use vehicles available at a day rate, plus bush meals, sundowners, a swimming pool, pre-bookable hot-air balloon safaris, and a visit to a local school supported by the Land & Life Foundation.
The Masai Mara National Reserve is known for its resident big cats — lion, leopard and cheetah — and the camp’s position directly on the migration route means wildebeest and zebra crossing the Sand River can sometimes be watched from the tent verandahs.
The Sand River itself, with its sandbanks, exposed rock and riverine forest, gives a different foreground to the usual open-plains shot, particularly during a migration crossing directly in front of camp.
Sand River Masai Mara supports a local school through the Land & Life Foundation, Elewana’s charitable arm, which funds education, clinic support and conservation projects across the communities surrounding its properties in Kenya and Tanzania.
