Serengeti Pioneer Camp

Moru Kopjes, Central Serengeti, Tanzania

A twelve-tent camp modelled on the mobile safaris of the 1930s, pitched among the granite kopjes of south-central Serengeti.

Overview

Serengeti Pioneer Camp is a twelve-tent camp built among the granite outcrops of the Moru Kopjes in south-central Serengeti, styled after the mobile safari camps of the 1930s. Positioned to overlook Lake Magadi and the surrounding plains, it works in tandem with Elewana’s Serengeti Migration Camp in the north of the park to give guests access to over 90 percent of the Serengeti’s migration territory.

Rooms & Table

The Rooms

Twelve tents, including one two-bedroom family tent, furnished with canvas-covered floors, writing desks and queen beds under mosquito nets, each with an en-suite flush toilet and a solar-heated, period-style hot shower.

Food & Service

A central dining tent hosts breakfast and dinner, while lunch is taken either back at camp or out in the bush, in keeping with the camp’s mobile-safari character.

Activities

Game drives across the Moru Kopjes and the surrounding central Serengeti plains in search of the Big Five and the migrating herds, along with bush lunches and sundowners overlooking the savannah.

Wildlife & Photography

The migrating herds move north through the Moru Kopjes and Seronera area around April and May en route to the Western Corridor, and the granite kopjes themselves are a longstanding predator lookout, favoured by lion and leopard for their view over the surrounding plains.

A Photographer's Note

The kopjes give an elevated vantage and a granite foreground rarely available on the flat plains further north, useful for both wide landscape shots and closer views of the resident lion prides that use the rocks as lookouts.

Conservation & Impact

Serengeti Pioneer Camp supports the Land & Life Foundation, Elewana’s charitable arm, which funds schools, clinics and conservation initiatives across the communities surrounding the collection’s properties in Kenya and Tanzania.
