Sunbird Lodge

Lake Elementaita, Kenya

A small boutique lodge of fourteen cottages overlooking Lake Elementaita’s flamingo-lined shore.

Overview

Sunbird Lodge is a compact, garden-set property above Lake Elementaita, one of the smaller and quieter of Kenya’s Rift Valley soda lakes. Its cottages look directly down over the lake’s pink-tinged shallows toward the Aberdare foothills beyond.

Rooms & Table

The Rooms

Fourteen cottages, each with a private veranda facing the lake.

Food & Service

Meals served on a terrace overlooking Lake Elementaita.

Activities

Guided walks and game drives around the Soysambu Conservancy on the lake’s shore, and boat or shoreline access to the lake’s flamingo and pelican populations.

Wildlife & Photography

Lesser and greater flamingos, pelicans and a wide range of waterbirds gather along the lake’s shallow soda flats, framed by the extinct volcano Kilombe and the wider Rift Valley escarpment.

A Photographer's Note

The lake’s shallow, mirror-flat water makes for reliable reflection shots of the flamingo flocks in the stiller early-morning light.

Conservation & Impact

Lake Elementaita and its surrounding conservancies form part of the Kenya Lake System UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its importance to migratory and resident waterbirds.
