Summary
Solio Rhino Sanctuary is a place unlike any other I’ve been to. If you want to truly understand the Southern White Rhino, this is the place to be. With a super-healthy population of Southern White and Black Rhinos, it’s a dream destination for wildlife photographers. The fact that it is probably one of the best places to photograph Reticulated Giraffes just adds to the charm.
What makes Solio even more special is its habitat: the sanctuary lies in a valley between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range, where open grasslands blend seamlessly with acacia woodlands and bush savannah. Through the heart of it runs a river that in places becomes swampy, creating patches of denser riparian forest amid the more open acacia scrub. This mosaic of open plains, acacia stands, and gallery forest gives rhinos the balance of cover and space they need, and provides photographers with endlessly varied and dramatic scenes.
